School entrance can be a huge challenge these days. An essential part of getting accepted by the Schools authorities is good ISEE scores. Together with SSAT, ISEE is the most common test for private and independent schools. A good way to ensure good ISEE scores is to prepare well for the actual test. Getting good prep scores is crucial for your child’s self-confidence and vastly increases the chances for good scores on the real test.
ISEE scores vs SSAT scores
Unlike SSAT which can be taken several times each year, ISEE test can only be administrated twice a year when actually applying for a Private or Independent School. So how do you get the necessary prep lessons for your child? There are of course several options, one is to hire a teacher who has experience with school entrance exams, make sure she has such knowledge since not all teachers have this experience. Then there’s the option to buy a test prep program. This in itself will probably give you the most when it comes to cost benefit for your child. A third option which I truly believe to be the best one (from many years’ experience), is a combination. First you purchase a high quality ISEE test prep program. Then you hire a teacher who has ISEE test experience and tell here that you want your child to work independently with this program between each lesson. This way you really don’t have to hire the teacher for many hours and at the same time you’ll make sure that each hour with the teacher is well spent time and money. The teacher will be most useful if there are certain sections of the test that your child finds extra difficult. Getting extra help with these are well spent money. You should also be aware of that some of the test programs offer great online and phone support and may even answer specific questions you might have to ISEE scores or other related tests such as SSAT as well.

In case you consider both ISEE and SSAT test I will give you a few details about the differences. A few schools demand that your child takes both. Sometimes parents ask me if it’s a good idea to take the SSAT before taking the ISEE. Usually this is not a good idea, the two tests are quite different and they are testing different parts of your child’s capabilities. I would rather recommend preparing for the actual test your child is going to take. Some good prep test programs have realistic test examples that are almost identical to the ones your child will get on the ISEE test. This is especially important with ISEE who is only administered twice a year. There are test exams in some prep programs for instance PrivateSchoolExam.
Good ISEE scores can be achieved easier than equivalent SSAT scores
Generally speaking ISEE is considered to be easier than SSAT. An ISEE test takes about 3 hours and you have only 4 choices for each question and there’s no guessing penalty. SSAT gives you only 2.5 hours with a guessing penalty and has 5 choices for each question. ISEE has Quantitative Comparison. This is usually perceived as very challenging to children, because it’s very different from the way they learn math in school. Children are not used to this type of thinking, so it usually quite a shock to them. I hope this blog has been helpful to you and I wish you good luck with your ISEE scores and SSAT scores!
